HARMON AND BEVERLY SCHMELZENBACH
Dr. and Mrs. Harmon Schmelzenbach are Career Assignment Missionaries for the Church of the Nazarene. Harmon and Beverly were assigned to Africa in 1960 and served continuously as missionaries until retirement in 2001.
Dr. Schmelzenbach is a third-generation missionary, having grown up in Africa. Shortly after the turn of the centry, his grandfather founded the work of the Church of the Nazarene in Africa, establishing the national church in the countries of Swaziland, Mocambique and South Africa. Malaria claimed his life in 1929 and he is buried in Swaziland together with five of his children. Two of his sons, Elmer and Paul, were born in Africa and served out their lives there as missionaries. Elmer was the father of our speaker.
Dr. and Mrs. Schmelzenbach's assignments have centered around pioneering new countries and the formation of national districts. Dr. Schmelzenbach registered the Church of the Nazarene in Botswana in 1971. Following that they entgered Namibia and organized a Pioneer District there in 1976. In 1984, they went to Kenya and pioneered the work of the Church across East Africa. This work is now comprised of nine nationally led districts, two pioneer districts and covers the countries of Kenya, Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Zaire, Ethiopia and Eritrea. Currently this new work exceeds one thousand churches.
The training of pastors led to the laying of the foundation for the Africa Nazarene University in Nairobi, Kenya, in 1986. The University is now fully operational, accredited and chartered under national leadership.
In Septemember 1994, Dr. Schmelzenbach accepted the assignment of "Misionary-at-Large" for the Church. This has involved them in conventions world wide, the 'Jesus Film' project and the establishment of national work in the country of Hungary. On January 1, 2001, they retired having served continuously as missionaries for just over forty years. They continue with a full schedule of conventions and services in the interests of Missionary Work.
The Schmelzenbachs have three grown children" LeAnn, Harmon, Jr. and Pamela. Harmon, Jr., serves as a fourth generation Nazarene missionary in the South Pacific.
